Michigan Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Throughout the state many communities are celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month with various activities ranging from cultural music and dance, educational forums and inspirational presentations from notables in business, education and advocate groups.

On September 28th the Hispanic Latino Commission of Michigan kicked off at the State Capitol featuring three Hispanic State Legislators who represent the Hispanic Caucus - State Senator Valde Garcia (R), State Rep. Lee Gonzales and State Rep. John Espinoza. The three members were joined by Commissioner Lawrence Garcia (pictured) Leslie Brogan, Director of Goverment Affairs for Comcast Cable (pictured below), who sponsored the event, and Dr. Juan Andrarde, President of the U.S. Hispanic Leadership Institute, who gave the inspirational keynote.

Approximately 200 high school Hispanic students from around the state attended the event while feasting on a free taco lunch provided by JRS Food Services.

Comcast Cable and State Farm Insurance have been proud sponsors over the years and acknowledge their support and committment to diversity and inclusion for Michigan residents.

Dr. Andrade gave a compelling and inspirational speech on the economic and cultural contribution Hispanics and Latinos bring to the table. "We are here to give and not take," referring to Hispanic and Latinos have one of the largest economic buying power not only in Michigan but in the U.S. where over $1 trillion dollars are generated in purchasing and productivity among this ethnic group. More startling are the rising numbers, particularly in the younger generation will eventually be the backbone of our country's workforce.

Dr. Andrade pointed out that there are still obstacles Hispanics face in this country and the State in relation to educational attainment and opportunities, access to services, and equal footing in the job market and business enterprises, where again, Latino business have grown exponetially.

Hispanic Heritage Month spans the month of September 15th through October 15th.
