As the holiday season approaches and the campaign winds down, I’ve been witnessing many acts of kindness toward families in need.
During this time of the year phones from many human service agencies, including the United Way, are constantly ringing from families who are in need looking for rent or utility assistance and requesting for holiday help. Unfortunately, the requests are coming in larger numbers earlier in the season. On the brighter side, we have also received calls from kind citizens, churches and interest groups willing to donate their time helping the needy, providing in-kind gifts like food baskets, toys, clothing and cash gifts. An example of such an act of kindness came through our door just the other day.
A working mother who is a troop leader for a Girl Scout Daisy Troop delivered a decorated care box filled with Turkey Dinner fixings, along with a Meijer Gift card for a family where both parents were disabled from an accident and unable to work. The mother said each girl gladly contributed a couple of dollars and designed a holiday poster for the family. The care package was delivered and the family was touched by such a thoughtful act.
This is a time of reflection where we give thanks and count our blessings on things that matter most to each of us – Our health, family/loved ones or our security and freedom. More important, we consider those who are less fortunate and in need. The citizens of Eaton County, no matter how difficult the times, have the greatest capacity of giving and giving back.
My mother once told me three things that are necessary to lead a productive life; Good health, financial stability and strong family ties. Any one of these elements is vulnerable to life’s uncertainty. Though held close, these three elements will help weave a blanket of stability to fight life’s uncertainty.
This Thursday whether you’re at a family gathering or involved serving up or delivering meals, remember that an act of kindness comes in many different forms: Giving of gift, time or words of encouragement, thanks and praise to those in need.
As for the United Way campaign, I am grateful to the many residents in Eaton County who have stepped up and continue their giving to United Way, helping to make our $275,000 goal a reality. For those who have not yet contributed or completed their drive, please consider those in need you will be helping.
